‘A surreal journey’: Palestinian students evacuated from Gaza arrive in the UK | Higher education

A group of Palestinian scholars waiting for evacuation from Gaza to take their place in the United Kingdom universities finally came from a surrender journey from destruction to an opportunity.

34 students, all of them completely financed the scholarships, came to London and Manchester on three flights from Queen Alia International Airport in Jordan. A number made flights to Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Their arrival carried out a monthly campaign by politicians, academics and others on behalf of more than 100 Palestinian students who bidd up from the UK universities this year. Supporters hope to follow others and a permanent way will be established to benefit more of the Palestinian scholars.

Training Secretary Bridget Phillipson welcomed them: “The flight time from Amman to England is only six hours, but this was for months in planning and productions.

“These students lived with the most terrible ordeal. After almost two years of war, many lost their loved ones and all of them were thrown into chaos.

“Nevertheless, despite all the deaths and destruction they witnessed, they did not give up. Instead, they chose to answer the loss of loss with learning, determination and hope.

“A source of inspiration for all of us – and I’m deeply relieved to come to England and now they can continue their education in safety.”

Their arrival arrived shortly after joining Canada and Australia, officially declared the recognition of the Palestinian state.

Commenting after the arrival of the students, Foreign Minister Yette Cooper said: ız Our support reflects his devotion to the future of Britain’s future of Gaza and the restructuring of the educational of the next generation will play a vital role. ”

Kohort includes the international program of the government’s international program Chevening scholarship receivers, which is aimed at the leaders of tomorrow and supports their one -year graduate degrees in the UK.

However, there were two women who were not included in the cohort, and Liverpool Hygiene and Tropical Medicine School, who rejected their first release invitations when they were told that their young children and their spouses would not be allowed to leave the Gaza Strip with them.

Just a few days before the first bus of the UK students left Gaza last week, two doctoral students were informed that their families were suitable for UK visas, but they were not suitable for release. According to the supporters, they chose to do a “impossible situation ..

Nora Parr, a researcher at the University of Birmingham Nora Parr, who coordinated the efforts to support students, was excited to see that Palestinian scholars were greeted on university campuses in England.

“They start a new section that all of them are a surreal journey from destruction to destruction. Of course, the logistics and parameters of the new UK plan are still working for students.

“We hope that a permanent path will be established in England because they will not be asked to make choices between mothers and fathers and family survival, that they will be included in the post -doctoral academics and that a political solution is created for Palestine, since these scholars allow these scholars to use what they have learned in the UK to rebuild their communities.
