Bedford train crash latest: Injury toll rises to 100 as investigators look into cause of collision

The ongoing investigation into what caused the Bedford train crash is likely looking into signal failures and the possibility of human error, an expert has said.

Authorities, led by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, will look at data from black boxes on trains, as well as CCTV and existing signaling information.

“I think this is due to human error, system error, or some kind of interaction from the outside environment… It’s very difficult to say. [what happened]rail systems consultant Peter Hicks said The Times.

“Them [the investigators] It will download from the systems on the trains which inputs the drivers made and which outputs they received from the signaling system. And they will be the ones who will be able to say what the root cause is and what the contributing causes are.”

British Transport Police have urged people to “avoid speculation” about what caused the Bedford train crash as the investigation continues.

“There will be a lot of questions about what exactly happened (Friday) night,” Police Chief Lucy D’Orsi said.

“I would like to reassure everyone that specialist investigators from British Transport Police are working with colleagues from the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch to gather the facts and establish what happened.

“They are extremely experienced and I ask all of us to refrain from speculation.”

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said in a statement about X that it was working with British Transport Police to establish what happened before the accident.

In a statement about X, the RAIB said: “RAIB investigators continue to collect evidence at the scene of yesterday’s collision of two trains near Elstow.

“The RAIB will conduct a full and independent safety investigation into this tragic accident.

“We will provide further updates in the coming days once we learn more.”

The East of England Ambulance Service released an update on the number of casualties in the crash, saying 100 people were injured.

The number of seriously injured people was 32 and the number of lightly injured people was 57. The ambulance service said 11 people were very seriously injured.

Nine of those people were in critical condition in hospital as of Saturday afternoon.

Bedfordshire Lord-Lieutenant Susan Lousada pays tribute to those involved in the Bedford crash.

He wrote of

“We commemorate with great sadness the train driver who lost his life while doing his duty. We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in this difficult time.”

The Police Federation of England and Wales has issued a statement regarding the Bedford train crash.

“Our thoughts remain with the victims involved in the Bedford train crash,” the FA said.

“We are also thinking of our BTP (British Transport Police) and Bedfordshire Police colleagues and all our emergency workers at this difficult time.”

Network Rail said on Saturday that part of its East Midlands route remained closed as the emergency response continued and crews assessed damage to trains and infrastructure.

The company said it would provide updates when it has a clearer understanding of the recovery efforts required and when services can safely reopen, adding that passengers should check with train operators for the latest travel advice.

Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullally said her prayers were with the family of the dead driver and those injured.

He wrote about X: “May God comfort them, protect them and equip all who care for them in the wake of this tragic event.”
