Actor left legacy of individual style
Before stylists and designers were styling actresses in red carpet ads for luxury brands, Diane Keaton developed an individual approach to androgynous dressing that resonated with women around the world.
The interesting combinations of the star, who died at the age of 79, consisting of slacks, vests, ties and hats, stay away from the traditional splendor of taffeta, silk and lace, and reflect the image of a woman who does not wait for men to open doors for her.
It was a timely update on screen stars Marlene Dietrich’s tuxedos and Katharine Hepburn’s turtleneck sweaters and wide-legged trousers.

Designer Ralph Lauren is often credited with introducing Keaton as a fashion icon in the 1977 Woody Allen film. Annie Hallbut the Oscar-winning actress was responsible for her character’s eclectic output.
“Annie’s style was Diane’s style; very eclectic,” says Lauren. Vogue at Ralph Lauren. “Oversized jackets and vests, floppy men’s hats and cowboy boots. We shared the same sensibility, but she had a style all her own. Annie Hall was pure Diane Keaton.”
Allen defended the sartorial choices of Keaton’s costume designer Ruth Morley. Annie Hall, challenged certain costume combinations. The controversial director, who dated Keaton in the early ’70s, admired the actor’s style when they met while working on the Broadway production. Play It Again SamThis became a movie.

“She would definitely show up every day with an incredibly creative outfit combination. They were amazing.” Allen told Rolling stone In 1977. “She was the type who, you know, came in with a football jersey and a skirt… and combat boots and, you know… you know, oven mitts.”
Keaton said her personal style journey began with the encouragement of her mother, amateur photographer Dorothy Keaton, who took her to second-hand stores.
