Queen Elizabeth’s son Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor “does not believe he acted inappropriately” despite allegations leveled against him about his close relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a new book has claimed. Royal author Hugo Vickers publishes his new book, Queen Elizabeth II. In Elizabeth he writes that he does not believe the allegations against the late monarch’s second son.
The Queen’s view of her son remains unchanged from her disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis; This interview was met with great public disbelief, anger and ridicule due to his outlandish excuses for not being able to sweat and his claim that he had been at the Pizza Express in Woking on the day he allegedly met Ms Giuffre.
Mr Vickers writes in his book: “Despite the car crash interview on Newsnight and other clear statements, the Queen did not believe he had acted inappropriately. Luckily he did not live to witness this outcome.”
It is understood that the king admitted that the crisis caused his mother “great distress”, but her mother did not accept the allegations. An example of this was when Andrew accompanied her to the memorial service for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in March 2022.
The author adds: “Andrew’s problems caused the Queen serious distress in the last years of her life. The Queen was deeply concerned about his future. One idea developed in the last year of his life was to set up a trust that Andrew could manage.”
In response to backlash over Andrew’s interview in which he said he had no regrets about being friends with Epstein, the former monarch fired his son from assuming royal duties. This saw him effectively dismissed as senior royal staffer.
It was also decided that it will stop using the HRH style in 2022. Queen Elizabeth died later that year.
A number of new allegations have since been made about Andrew, and new details of Andrew’s relationship with the convicted sex offender have come under scrutiny following the release of the Epstein files earlier this year.
Andrew was stripped of his remaining royal titles at the end of last year and was forced to give up his 30-room mansion at Windsor Manor.
He was arrested last month on suspicion of abuse of public office. He continues to deny wrongdoing.
