Afghanistan accuses Pakistan of targeting homes

Afghanistan’s Taliban government has accused the Pakistani military of targeting homes in airstrikes in Kabul and the southern province of Kandahar and said at least four civilians had been killed as fighting between the neighbors entered its third week.

Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that in X, Pakistani planes also hit the fuel depots of private airline Kam Air near Kandahar airport.

“This company provides fuel to civilian airlines as well as United Nations aircraft,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Pakistan’s military and government did not immediately comment on the matter.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have been targeting each other’s military installations since late February, when Kabul said it had struck Pakistani outposts along the border in response to Pakistani attacks.

The Pakistani military said its operations targeted the Pakistani Taliban and their support networks along the border, which Afghanistan has never officially recognized.

Both sides claimed to have suffered heavy losses in what Islamabad described as an “open war” with Afghanistan, which has become the deadliest conflict in recent years.

He said the attacks “will not go unanswered”.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said that at least four civilians, including children, were killed and 15 civilians were injured in the city.

Pakistan’s latest attacks took place the day after China’s special envoy Yue Xiaoyong arrived in Islamabad and met with his Pakistani counterpart Mohammed Sadiq following his visit to Kabul, where he met with Afghan government officials.

The international community’s repeated calls for moderation had little effect.

Pakistan has previously said its attacks along the border and inside Afghanistan target Khawarij only; is Islamabad’s term for the outlawed Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP.

Islamabad frequently accuses Afghanistan’s Taliban government of harboring the group, a charge Kabul denies.
