Swimming pool closures put children ‘at risk of drowning’

A union said that young people are at risk of “terrible” drowning because of the widespread closure of public swimming pools throughout England.

The GMB Union said that the research supports a study showing that 500 public swimming pool has closed its doors since 2010. Almost half of these closings have only been realized in the last five years.

London, West Midlands, South West, Wales, South East, Yorkshire, Scotland, Northern East and Midlands are particularly influenced.

Throughout the local government and fitness and entertainment industry, leaders urged the government to increase funds for community assets such as leisure centers, swimming pools and local sports halls.
