The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, on the last day of the Budget session (March 25, 2026), witnessed a stormy session after the Opposition objected to the bill, seeking debate on the issue. The opposition and treasury benches confronted each other by holding shouting rallies. The Speaker had to adjourn the session for a few minutes before reconvening and passing the bill in question. The opposition left the hall in protest.

This was related to a bill that amended the Mumbai municipal corporations act and reintroduced certain rules regarding determination of capital value, retrospective collection of tax and property tax. After the Speaker read the quote, the Opposition objected and tried to speak on the issue. It led to heated debates between the Treasury and the opposition.

Shiv Sena UBT MLA Sunil Prabhu said, “We had no objection to the passage of the law. But we wanted to talk about it. We looked for an opportunity to put forward our point of view. We wanted to ask whether legal opinion was taken on this issue. As the opposition, we have the right to ask questions. They blamed it on the opposition.”

“We had raised so many issues. But we did not get satisfactory answers to any of them. The government is not serious. The whole session was treated very lightly. Why did the government insist on introducing important bills at the last minute and rushing them through without any discussion?” Anil Parab and Jayant Patil asked.

“Maharashtra’s image has been tarnished by this legislative session. This is the first time a Minister was beaten by the government police and had to seek justice from the Parliament,” Mr. Parab said.

Meanwhile, the Speaker expressed his anger and uneasiness over the chaos in the Parliament. Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar said, “Maharashtra legislature is a first-class legislature. No one should engage in behavior that will tarnish its image.”

He added that the opposition was behaving irresponsibly. “The bill was included in the program today. The opposition asked for time until after the Prime Minister’s speech to examine the bill. A mutual decision was made. But they still created chaos in the Parliament,” he said.
