AI-generated Christmas mural blasted as a ‘Lovecraftian horror’ removed after backlash

A Christmas mural created by artificial intelligence and described as a “Lovecraft-style horror” has been removed following public outcry.

From afar, wall art on Riverside Walk in Kingston upon Thames depicted Pilgrims gathering to ice skate and light a fire.

However, upon closer examination, the faces, animals, and snowmen in the picture were deformed, the faces of the people skating were distorted, and the dogs in the landscape looked more like chickens.

The giant mural not only caused a stir among locals, but also went viral on social media, prompting landowners in the commercial area where it was located to demolish it.

One person on Reddit noted that the artwork contained “Lovecraft-style horror scenes.” Another on Facebook said they were “speechless” by the mural, saying it showed “a Nativity scene where pilgrims gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus.”

A spokesman for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames said: Independent: “Kingston Council had no involvement in the planning or financing of the exhibition. “The landowner has confirmed that he has now removed the installation.”

The manager of the Côte Brasserie restaurant on Riverside Walk said: Metro There were numerous complaints and the mural became a “major controversy”.

They said, “The landlord of the building did this, it has nothing to do with the restaurant.” “They put up an AI-generated mural with distorted seafood over the summer, which was also controversial. Everyone has their own opinions, I guess. We had a lot of people shopping to see it, but there were a lot of complaints.”

Kelly Sherlock told Metro: “It was an eyesore, it was really crazy. Everyone was going to look down, so it was eye-catching, but in the wrong way.”

The site’s owners reportedly insist that the mural is a Christmas scene inspired by 16th-century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Based in London. Bruegel was known for his genre paintings of peasants. The titles of some of his paintings are ‘The Massacre of the Innocents’ and ‘Hunters in the Snow’, which are related to the biblical story.

Independent It contacted the investment firm behind Riverside Walk for comment.
