Charges laid after video circulates of teens allegedly hooning on Brisbane streets
Two boys have been charged after videos emerged of a group of teenagers allegedly using e-bikes improperly in Brisbane and a cyclist crashing into the Clem Jones Tunnel.
A video shot by one of the group members shows around 20 young people riding e-bikes and e-scooters in the CBD and inner suburbs.
They allegedly cut through traffic, narrowly avoided pedestrians, drove on the wrong side of the road and set themselves on fire during the dangerous demonstration on January 23.
A 16-year-old boy crashed into the tunnel at Kangaroo Point and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The alleged cameraman and the injured child are now charged.
Police searched a home on Scott Road in Herston on January 29, where they seized a non-compliant e-bike and phone.
For use in public places, e-bikes must be predominantly pedal-powered, have a small electric motor providing only assistance, up to 250 watts, and have the motor disengaged at 25 km/h.
A 15-year-old boy from Herston has been charged under “post and brag” laws with posting material relating to driving without a licence, driving without registration and driving without insurance, as well as certain offensive conduct.
On February 1, another home on Wexford Street in Kenmore Hills was searched and a second e-bike was seized.
A 16-year-old boy was charged with dangerous motor vehicle operation, driving without a licence, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.
Inspector Matt Blunn said the incident was extremely worrying.
“Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to road safety.
“Police take all reports of these offenses seriously and will continue to challenge, engage and educate drivers and guardians about e-mobility device safety.
“If you don’t obey the law, expect the police to come knocking on your door.”
