Air India audit uncovers large-scale misuse of staff vacation travel scheme; 4,000 employees under scanner: Report

Air India identified extensive inconsistencies in the implementation of its staff holiday travel programme, affecting over 4,000 staff, and initiated remedial measures, including the imposition of sanctions on employees responsible. PTI.

It was revealed that numerous employees were exploiting the system by designating unrelated people as relatives to access privileges. Some examples even showed staff taking these free coupons and selling them to external parties for profit. PTI reported.

According to the news agency, a series of official inquiries to Air India on Thursday seeking clarification on the matter and subsequent action taken remained unanswered.

More than 4,000 workers were found to have violated ELT rules. PTI reported. Violations, including claims dating back to the previous fiscal period, were also identified. Exact figures regarding the number of employees, the financial impact of policy abuse, and the specific time frame of identified violations could not be verified.

Air India initiated recovery steps and the staff concerned were instructed to repay the fraudulently obtained funds. According to the news agency, serious fines were also imposed on many workers who participated in such actions. There appear to have been oversights at various operational levels, and the entire situation highlights an “ethics and conduct issue.” PTI reported.

The majority of staff found to have abused the system joined the carrier following its privatization.

In response to deceptive activities, Air India has strengthened its criteria for accessing privileges under the ELT framework.

To receive these benefits, an employee must now provide beneficiary information and documented evidence of familial affiliation with the firm.

Staff are given a cumulative 14 segment or round-trip flight coupons during a fiscal year. This can also include open-jawed vouchers, which involve booking a seat for a journey departing from a location other than the original destination.
