Pilot Arrested by RCMP

According to Canadian officials, the problem arose after a crew member reported concerns about the pilot’s ability to perform his duties. Richmond Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded and arrested the pilot. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but RCMP have stated that no further details will be released at this stage.

Following the arrest, the planned flight was postponed for a few hours while Air India made alternative arrangements. The airline later confirmed that the flight took off safely after an alternative pilot was assigned to take over.

In a statement, Transport Canada reminded airlines that Canadian aviation regulations strictly prohibit crew members from operating within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, airlines are required to ensure that crew members are fit for duty. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to serious consequences, including suspension or revocation of flight permits and possible legal penalties.

Air India’s Response to the Incident

Air India responded to the incident by explaining the situation in detail. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that flight AI186 was delayed due to the pilot being evacuated at the last minute following concerns raised by Canadian officials about his fitness to fly. Air India stated that in line with safety protocols, the airline replaced the crew member with an alternative pilot to ensure the flight could continue.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and are cooperating fully with the local authorities,” an Air India spokesperson said.
