‘Thank God for just being lazy’: Man wins £125k jackpot after forgetting to cancel lottery ticket

A man who forgot to cancel a lottery direct debit after his fiancee asked him to save money for their wedding has won £125,000.

His bride-to-be, Rouhanna Coulthard, asked James Adams to cancel her entry into the Postcode Lottery three months ago – but thankfully the desire to save money was put on his mind.

The 31-year-old motion graphics designer said: “I was going to stop doing this three months ago but then I forgot. Thank God for being lazy and really stupid. Incompetence pays off!”

Rohanna, who started screaming when the check appeared, said: “James never told me he had signed up and I asked him to cancel the direct debit as we were saving for the wedding.

“Thank God he didn’t. I wouldn’t have been in very good shape and [would] You probably won’t be very good.”

He laughed: “But here we are. I forgive him.”

The couple shared £1million with seven other neighbors in Kingswood, near Bristol, after their postcode won the lottery’s weekly millionaire street prize.

A further four winning venues will be announced and local charities in each of the winning sites will also receive a total of £1 million.

One of her neighbours, bride-to-be Gemma Marson-May, had a hunch she would receive a reward over the summer.

“I had a strong feeling that I was going to win, so I signed up in August,” he said.

“I felt like the postcode was going to win in September. I’m actually only a week away, so that worked out pretty well.

“It seems ridiculous, but something told me I’d be an idiot if I didn’t sign up. When I went to join, I thought about leaving, but I thought I’d kick myself if I didn’t sign up.”

Another winner said the win brought a smile back to his face after several years of difficult health struggles.

Steve Hooper had triple bypass surgery nine years ago and is currently being monitored after being treated for bladder cancer.

The insurance claims manager said: “I’ve been living with cancer for the last four years. It may kill me, but I’m still smiling.”

“I go for checkups every three months. I also had a triple bypass. But this has really put a big smile on my face, and it will bring that smile to a lot of people I know.”
