While the federal opposition has been grabbing all the headlines for the past few weeks with its rejection of emissions targets, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) is being held in Belém, Brazil.

Prime minister Anthony Albanese Australia and Türkiye are among world leaders who have chosen not to attend, despite a deadlock in the fight over who will host next year’s conference. His absence was seen by some as an admission that Australia was set to lose, while others saw it as evidence that the Labor government no longer made hosting the climate summit a priority.
