Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has urged Tamil media to avoid using the term “censorship” in relation to films, stating that the word has been officially discarded after years of debate. In a social media post, he noted that India’s film regulatory body has been renamed the Central Board of Film Certification, reflecting a move away from the idea of ”censoring” cinema. He said that the term “censorship” has been legally challenged, has become obsolete and should no longer be used by media organisations. Mr. Haasan said a democratic government should not claim the right to censor art, a widely accepted principle in global cinema. He added that Tamil cinema also stands behind this stance.
