The TikTok video has received more than 3 million likes and thousands of comments; Some hikers have noted that being abandoned by a partner in the mountains has become all too common. The video, shared by user @everafteriya, featured point-of-view footage of the track and included the following caption: “POV: you go hiking in the mountains with him but he leaves you alone and you realize he never liked you to begin with.”

Alpine divorce, a strange and disturbing term, is gaining traction on social media and quickly turning into a viral trend. Users also share their personal stories about divorce in the mountains. The concept dates back to Robert Barr’s 1893 short story “Divorce in the Alps,” in which an unhappy husband plans to murder his wife during a trip to the Swiss Alps. The fictional narrative later went on to inspire modern slang. Discussions on social media indicate that the idea is terrifying and largely fictional in origin.

Divorce in the Alps: People share real-life stories
Many social media users shared their divorce stories in the Alps and how their boyfriends/husbands abandoned them and abandoned them on hiking trips. According to a report in Outside Online last week, 37-year-old Thomas Plamberger was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter for allegedly abandoning his girlfriend during a technical climb to the 12,461-meter Grossglockner summit. He was fined €9,600 (about $11,300) and given a five-month suspended prison sentence.
According to reports, Plamberger abandoned him about 54 meters below the summit without providing an emergency blanket due to strong winds, and he subsequently died of hypothermia.

“I just saw a Tiktok of a girl whose boyfriend dumped her during a walk in the woods. The comments were about how this is something more than one guy does. It’s so common it’s called Alpine Divorce and there are support groups for it…. All I can say is what’s wrong with men??? Why would you even consider dumping someone like that? I’m embarrassed.” one user wrote.
