MP Colin Boyce to move spill motion for National Party leadership; Liberal senator says the West has ‘probably been too nice’ about Islam
Two federal officers opened fire during an encounter that led to the death of critical care nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend, a Customs and Border Protection official told Congress in a memorandum sent Tuesday.
Officers attempted to detain Pretti, but he resisted, leading to a struggle, according to a notification sent to Congress by The Associated Press. During the struggle, a Border Patrol agent shouted, “He’s got a gun!” he shouted. He did this several times, the official said.
A Border Patrol officer and a CBP officer opened fire with Glock pistols, the notice said.
Investigators from CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility conducted the analysis based on review of body-worn camera footage and agency documents, the statement said. The law requires the agency to notify appropriate congressional committees about deaths in CBP custody within 72 hours.
Separately, a man was arrested for spraying an unknown liquid on U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar while she was speaking at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis.
The Democrat had just called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be repealed and for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign after being blasted.
The developments come a day after President Donald Trump ordered border czar Tom Homan to take over his administration’s crackdown on immigrants in Minnesota following Pretti’s death; This was the second fatal incident this month in which a person was shot and killed by immigration law enforcement.
By sending Homan to Minnesota, “we’re going to de-escalate some of the tension,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News.
Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook became the latest executive to weigh in on Pretti’s killing, telling employees he was “heartbroken” by the events and appealing for calm.
“This is a time for de-escalation,” Cook wrote in an internal memo to employees posted on Apple’s website. “I believe America will be strongest when we live up to our highest ideals, treating everyone with dignity and respect, no matter who they are or where they come from.”
Cook added that he discussed the issue with President Donald Trump earlier this week.
