His son, the late Norman Brisbane Jolly spoke with ABC Radio in 1998.

Norman tells the story of my mother, when I was discussed, when Brisbane was discussed, my father said to the mother – because it was the mayor of Windsor at that time – ‘I think I will rely on the Mayor of Brisbane’.

“And the mother said, ‘Well (and remembering that my mother had six children at that stage).

“I am very pleased to leave, because this is the reason why I’m here.”

Jolly on behalf of Jolly said: “As a little child going to school, I remember that I was the most ashamed of this name because it looked me like that … Everyone is often a funny name when John or Jack is.

“I overcome this because my son was Warren Brisbane when he was born, and when his son was born, Andrew became Brisbane. This tradition continued.”

Norman told him that his father was a very humble man, that he rejected a knight, and the city’s request for naming the William Jolly Bridge of the city. After the death of the former mayor in 1955, his family agreed to honor him with the name of the bridge.
