Amazon Web Services outage sparks global online chaos across Snapchat, Fortnite, Canva

Amazon’s cloud unit, Amazon Web Services, suffered a severe outage that led to online chaos on many global websites, including Snapchat.

Users have reported outages across multiple platforms, including Roblox, Fortnite, Life360, Clash Royale, PlayStation, Canva, Hinge and more.

Website monitor Downdetector noted a large spike in outages on October 20, and AWS confirmed the situation on its health dashboard.

“We can confirm that error rates and delays have increased for multiple AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region,” the Amazon subsidiary said.

They said engineers were assigned and based on initial investigation, the issue appeared to be related to the DNS resolution DynamoDB API endpoint on US-EAST-1.

AWS has since downgraded the severity of the problem.

“We are seeing significant signs of improvement. The majority of requests should now be successful. We continue to work on queued requests. We will continue to provide additional information.”
