James Cameron slams Amy Poehler over Kathryn Bigelow Golden Globes joke

James Cameron, the man behind the “Avatar” movies and “Titanic,” is criticizing Amy Poehler for taking a blow to her personal life more than a decade ago.

Poehler and Tina Fey were presenting the best director award at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow was one of the nominees that year. The former couple was married between 1989 and 1991.

Bigelow was nominated for directing the film “Zero Dark Thirty,” which was shot in Pakistan and contains scenes of torture.

Referring to Bigelow’s film, Poehler said, “When it comes to torture, I trust the woman who was married to James Cameron for three years.”

Thirteen years later, Cameron responds to Poehler’s “ignorant dig.”

“I’m pretty thick-headed and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but this has gone too far,” he said.

“The fact that people find it funny even though they have no idea who I am or how I work shows what they think of me,” the director continued.

Although Cameron took offense to the joke, he said that he and Bigelow were friends and supported each other’s work.

A few years before Poehler’s sting, Cameron and Bigelow were neck and neck at the 2010 Academy Awards. Both were nominated for best director; Cameron was awarded for “Avatar” and Bigelow was awarded for “Hurt Locker”.

Ultimately, Bigelow beat Cameron and took home the Oscar for best director.

“I was the first person to stand up and applaud,” Cameron said. He told the New York Times that he wishes the Academy would “share the love” and consider “Avatar” worthy of the best picture award. However, “Hurt Locker” also took home this award.
