Palaniswami, Anbumani criticise DMK govt. over SC observation on Mekedatu project

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday criticized the DMK government for the Supreme Court’s observation on the Mekedatu project.

The Supreme Court termed Tamil Nadu’s application challenging Karnataka’s proposal to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu as “premature” and refused to entertain it. If the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is approved, the affected parties, including Tamil Nadu, will be free to take action in accordance with the law.

In a post on X, Mr. Palaniswami said the Supreme Court’s observation was shocking and disappointing. He alleged that the DMK government led by MK Stalin had not put forward strong arguments against the project. “Those in DMK are only interested in protecting their business interests in Karnataka,” Mr. Palaniswami alleged. He urged the DMK government to take appropriate measures to protect the rights of the State.

In a separate statement, PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss said the Supreme Court’s observation created an opportunity for the Center to review the DPR for the project. He said the DMK did not put forward proper arguments and suffered a major defeat when it came to protecting the State’s rights over the Cauvery. Dr. “The Supreme Court’s decision is dangerous and is in favor of Karnataka,” Anbumani said.

He added that the DMK government should file a review petition, put forward strong arguments and protect the rights of the State.
