Social media has been abuzz with anger following chaotic scenes at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium during Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour 2025, with fans voicing strong complaints about the mismanagement of the event. The situation was further exacerbated when fans who had paid R10,000 as ticket price for the Salt Lake Stadium event were disappointed to not be able to see the Argentinian icon. While on the pitch, Messi was surrounded by more than a hundred people, including many politicians, dignitaries and security personnel.
Fans took the Salt Lake Stadium carpet at home
In a widely circulated video, a disheartened fan can be seen leaving the stadium with a piece of carpet over his shoulder after Messi briefly appeared on stage. In the video, the fan sarcastically says that he bought the rug to make up for the loss since his ticket money was wasted.
“Messi ka face tak dikhai nahi diya. Camera mein mera face mat dikhana. Carpet le ke ja raha hoon. Itna paisa diya hai. Ghar mein Practice karunga,” he said in Bengali.

In the video, the interviewer asked the fan why he was carrying the rug. The man added that he spent a lot of money on tickets but felt cheated by the experience and wanted to “gain something” from the event. He turned his frustration into humor by jokingly saying that he would use the carpet in his home for indoor football practice.
Messi is in Hyderabad
Unlike the chaos in Kolkata, Messi’s program in Hyderabad ended on a positive note, marked by meticulous preparations, effective planning and discipline that made the second leg of the GOAT India Tour a success.
Hyderabad, the City of Orders, showed how to successfully manage an event of this scale, in sharp contrast to the previous chaos in Kolkata, where Messi’s visit was marred by poor crowd management and security lapses on Saturday.
The Argentine footballer wowed the Hyderabad crowd at the almost packed Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium and showcased the skills that cemented his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Messi is in Kolkata
Earlier in the day, Messi arrived at Salt Lake Stadium but left less than 10 minutes later. The planned lap of honor was reportedly cut short due to overcrowding of politicians, officials and their families surrounding the football star.
As Messi left the stadium, some of the crowd booed officials and politicians and tensions rose inside. Many fans later took to social media to air their complaints about long wait times, poor crowd control and inadequate planning, saying the experience did not live up to expectations for an event featuring a global football icon.
