Another country is dragged in to war as drone slams into international airport in Azerbaijan six miles from Iran’s border

Drones from Iran shot down and detonated over Azerbaijan today, triggering an immediate warning that the country ‘reserves the right to take retaliatory measures’.

The strikes risk expanding the conflict, with one drone hitting near an airport in Nakhchivan and causing a fire, while another crashed near a school.

The airport is located approximately six miles from the Iranian border.

The city is the capital of a strategically sensitive territory of Azerbaijan, separated from the rest of the country and wedged between Iran, Armenia and Türkiye.

Azerbaijan has deep security ties with Israel, including major arms purchases and intelligence cooperation, and Tehran sees it as Israel’s ‘listening post’ on Iran’s northern border.

In the statement made today by the country’s foreign ministry, ‘Drone attacks were carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan at noon.

‘One drone crashed into the airport terminal building, while another landed near a school building in Shekarabad village.

‘We strongly condemn these drone attacks, which were carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, damaged the airport building and injured two civilians.

Two unmanned aerial vehicles from Iran crashed and exploded in the oil-rich former Soviet state of Azerbaijan today.

The strikes showed the conflict widening, with one attack near the airport in Nakhchivan and another that set fires next to a school.

‘This attack on Azerbaijani territory is contrary to the norms and principles of international law and contributes to the escalation of tension in the region.

‘We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately clarify the above-mentioned issue, make a statement and take the necessary urgent measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.

‘Azerbaijan ‘reserves the right to take retaliatory measures.’

Iranian ambassador summoned to face ‘strong protest’.

Initial reports suggested that the attack was carried out by Shahid drones.

Azerbaijan, an oil-rich former Soviet state, became the 12th state hit by Iran and the tenth Muslim state.

Ironically, the day before, Azerbaijan’s dictator president Ilham Aliyev had attended the Iranian embassy in Baku to commemorate the slain religious leader Ali Khamenei.

This is breaking news, more will follow.
