Hawke dismissed concerns that moving away from net zero could cause the Liberal Party to lose votes or be perceived as anti-climate, hours before the party was due to meet to discuss its stance.
“I have no doubt that a lot of people on the left, led by Labor and others, will be making political claims about these things,” the centre-right Liberal told reporters in Canberra.

“The reality of net zero is that the government has failed to put forward policies that will even achieve its own targets. On its own modeling they will never get to net zero. In the government’s own modelling the cost is too high for businesses, society, households and energy production. So the government has failed to outline a credible plan,” Hawke said.
Hawke, one of Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s closest allies, said he would speak at today’s meeting, where all Liberals have been invited, but would not share what he wanted to say.
“I’ve always been skeptical about the government’s ability to set a mandatory target and enact it,” Hawke said.
