Anthony Joshua has ‘minor injuries’ after car crash kills two people in Nigeria
Lagos, Nigeria: British boxer and former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was taken to hospital with “minor injuries” following a traffic accident in Nigeria that killed two other passengers.
Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos state commissioner for information, confirmed the accident in a post on X, adding that the government had sent an ambulance to the scene of the accident.
The accident occurred at around 11am local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which connects Ogun state to Lagos, the economic capital of the country. Nigeria is the homeland of Joshua’s parents.
“The vehicle carrying Mr. Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances currently under investigation,” Ogun State Police said in a statement. Joshua, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and is receiving medical attention along with another injured person.
Preliminary investigations showed that the vehicle “exceeded the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre, and crashed into a truck stopped on the side of the road,” said Olusegun Ogungbeside, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The Ogun state government said “preliminary reports indicate that two foreign national males died at the scene.” The AP could not independently verify the identities of these individuals.

Joshua defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami on December 19 in a match he used to regain his sharpness in the ring. He lost the world heavyweight title to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021.
Paul said on Monday: “Life is so much more important than boxing. I pray for the lives lost, AJ and everyone affected by today’s unfortunate accident.”
