Anthropic’s Claude can now use a person’s computer to complete tasks as the company looks to create an AI agent that could rival the viral OpenClaw.

Anthropic announced Monday that users can now text Claude a task from their phone, and the AI agent will then complete that task.

Once prompted, Claude can open applications on your computer, navigate in a web browser, and fill out spreadsheets, Anthropic said. One of the prompts Anthropic showed in a video posted Monday is when a user is late for a meeting. The user asks Claude to export the pitch deck as a PDF file and attach it to a meeting invitation. In the video, Claude can be seen carrying out the task.

Anthropic’s latest update underscores an effort by AI firms to create so-called “agents” that can autonomously perform tasks on behalf of users at any time of the day.

Agent capabilities came to the fore after the release of OpenClaw, which went viral this year. OpenClaw connects to AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. A user can send messages to OpenClaw via popular applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram to perform tasks. Like Anthropic’s new feature, OpenClaw also runs locally on the user’s device, providing access to files.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC last week that OpenClaw is “definitely the next ChatGPT” as tech companies race to create their own competitors. Chip leader announced last week NemoPençeAn enterprise-level version of OpenClaw.

Precautions

Anthropic warned that computer use “is still premature compared to Claude’s ability to code or interact with text.”

“Claude is fallible, and threats are constantly evolving as we continue to improve our countermeasures,” Anthropic warned.

The company added that it had improved his computing ability “with security measures that minimize risk” and that Claude would always ask for permission before accessing new applications.

Users can use the Dispatch feature released last week on Claude Cowork. This allows users to have ongoing conversations with Claude and assign delegate tasks from a phone or desktop.
