Iconic Aussie business closing its door

A Gold Coast pie shop described as a “legendary institution” will close its doors this weekend after more than 60 years.
Coolangatta Pie Shop will close this weekend due to rising rents and a lack of tourist trade.
“Thank you for being part of our story,” read a sandwich board outside the Griffith St store.
The store opened in 1964, but the pressures of running a small business forced it to close.
“The rent is too high,” staff member Candy Tang told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
“And after Covid-19, it’s been very quiet at Coolangatta, especially in the last two years.”
For generations, the store has served vacationers and late-night partygoers looking for late-night entertainment.
“And so another legendary Gold Coast institution is gone,” one person wrote on social media.
“After serving its iconic pastries and pastries for 62 years, it closed up shop, becoming the latest victim of modern-day living.
“Remember when you were a kid, helping mom carry fresh white tank loaf and the family steak pie for dinner.”
