Iran’s Slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei To Be Buried July 9

Teheran: Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for nearly 37 years before being killed in Israeli and US airstrikes on February 28, will be buried on July 9, state television reported Saturday.

It was stated that the funeral ceremony in his hometown of Mashhad, the holy city in the north-east, which was originally planned to be held in March but was postponed due to the war, would be followed by three-day funeral ceremonies to be held in the capital Tehran on July 4 and in the holy city of Qom on July 7.

The start date of the national funeral, July 4, will coincide with the United States’ Independence Day, which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year.

Ali Khamenei’s son Mojtaba replaced him as religious leader in early March; this was the third since the establishment of the Islamic republic in 1979.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in the attacks that led to the death of his father and many officials, has not appeared in public since his appointment and communicates only through statements attributed to him.
