‘Delhi must become country’s economic hub’: CM Rekha Gupta at first Republic Day address

New Delhi: In her maiden speech at the Delhi state Republic Day event on Sunday, Prime Minister Rekha Gupta asserted that the city should be the strongest economic hub of the country.

Speaking at the event at Chhatrasal Stadium, he said the India-EU trade deal, which may be announced this week, could benefit Delhi by opening the doors of the city’s MSME sector to 4.5 million consumers in European Union countries.

The State Republic Day event is held on January 25 every year.

Gupta highlighted the work his government has done in Delhi in the last 11 months on issues such as health, education, infrastructure, ease of doing business, social welfare, transportation and rural development.

He said that under the ‘Safe City Project’, the Delhi government will install 10,000 advanced CCTV cameras all over the city.

Gupta said that after the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health scheme in Delhi, 6.5 lakh people have been registered so far and more than 30,000 people have benefited from it.
He said the government has set up more than 300 Ayushman Arogya health centers in the city. The Prime Minister said that in the education sector, the government has passed the Delhi Education Act to check arbitrary fee hikes by private schools to benefit lakhs of parents and students.

Gupta said his government is trying to make Delhi the “capital of ideas” through its enterprise policy. He said that the MoU signed by the government with the Reserve Bank of India will ensure that the city does not face any shortage of funds for development works.

Gupta said the government is paying special attention to rural parts of the national capital and has allocated Rs 1,700 billion for various developmental works, while also allocating Rs 700 billion for better civic infrastructure in slum clusters.

He said the government was also working in a deliberate manner to address “legacy problems” such as Yamuna cleanliness, garbage dumps and pollution in the city.

He said the government aims to strengthen the public transport fleet with 11,000 e-buses in the next three years and expand the metro network from the current 396 km to 500 km.

Gupta appealed to people to cooperate and participate in the Delhi government’s initiatives to develop the city. He urged private entities in the city to adopt solar energy, rainwater harvesting and decentralized STPs.

The Prime Minister also urged people to use vehicles running on clean fuel and use public transport to contribute to the government’s efforts towards a “clean and green Delhi”.
