January 2026 brings many public holidays in India due to New Year, regional festivals, second and fourth Saturday, Sunday and Republic Day. Banks are closed in certain cities today (January 2), so customers need to plan their branch visits in advance.
The new year has officially begun and with it comes a new calendar of public holidays. As of today, Friday, January 2, 2026, bank customers in many cities are already facing extended closures following the New Year holidays. With so many regional and national holidays lined up this month, it’s important to plan branch visits in advance to avoid inconvenience.
Banks are Closed Today: January 2, 2026
Banks are closed today in Aizawl, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The closure took place on the occasion of New Year celebrations and Mannam Jayanti, an important day celebrated in Kerala in memory of social reformer Mannathu Padmanabhan. While January 1 marks the beginning of the year across the country, January 2 also has cultural significance in some regions, especially in Kerala.
Early Furnace Closings to Pay Attention to
There are many outages in the first week of January. In Lucknow on January 3 (Saturday) Hz. Banks are closed due to Ali’s birthday. This will be followed by normal closing on Sunday, January 4. Additionally, the second Saturday, January 10, along with January 11 (Sunday), will see banks closed across India.
Mid-Month Regional Holidays
Mid-January brings with it a number of state-specific holidays associated with festivals and regional celebrations. January 12 is marked by Swami Vivekananda Jayanti closing banks in Kolkata. On January 14, cities like Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Itanagar observe Makar Sankranti or Magh Bihu.
Eid closures continue on January 15, when banks remain closed in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad and Vijayawada for Pongal and related harvest celebrations. Chennai will also close on Thiruvalluvar Day on January 16 and Uzhavar Thirunal on January 17.
End of January and National Holidays
Later in the month, January 23 will bring closures in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti, Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami. Banks across the country will be closed on January 24 (fourth Saturday), January 25 (Sunday) and Republic Day, January 26.
Digital Services Will Remain Available
Despite these branch closures, customers will be able to continue using UPI, online banking, mobile applications and ATMs without interruption. To avoid last-minute problems, it is recommended that you complete any branch-related work in advance and keep this holiday schedule in mind as January progresses.
