One of the nation’s most prominent swing state newspapers, which once supported President Donald Trump, will close later this year.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Wednesday that it will cease operations on May 3.
The Post-Gazette said in an article on its website that its parent company, Block Communications Inc., “lost more than $350 million in cash operating the newspaper” and that the company said the declining revenue suffered by local journalism was “no longer sustainable.”

In a statement to the Post-Gazette, the Block family expressed regret for its decision and said it was “proud of the service the Post-Gazette has provided to Pittsburgh for nearly a century.”
Founded in 1927, The Post-Gazette marked the merger of The Pittsburgh Post and Pittsburgh Gazette Times. The newspaper began rolling back its print editions in 2018, eventually printing only twice a week.
The Post-Gazette, which supported President Barack Obama in both 2008 and 2012, offered support to Trump in the 2020 elections after refraining from supporting him in 2016.

At the time, the Post-Gazette wrote to its readers that Trump “is no Churchill, of course, but he gets things done.”
“This newspaper hasn’t backed a Republican for president since 1972. But for all his faults, we believe Mr. Trump is the better choice this year,” the Post-Gazette editorial board wrote in October 2020. “Vote for the republic and believe in the country no matter what.”
The Post-Gazette, like many other major newspapers, has refrained from making presidential endorsements through the 2024 election cycle.
Local journalism across the country, particularly print newspapers, has seen revenue declines in recent years as consumers increasingly get their news from digital media.
