Authorities shot and killed a gunman who tried to enter President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Sunday morning, the Secret Service said.
Trump was not at the Palm Beach club where he resided at the time of the attack. The President was at the White House.
The man who was shot was carrying a gun and a gas canister, according to a Secret Service press release. He had entered the safe zone around Mar-a-Lago.
The man pointed his shotgun at an officer before he was shot, Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office officials said at a news conference Sunday morning. The man has not yet been identified by law enforcement, but the press release announcing the shooting said he was in his early 20s.
“A deputy and two Secret Service agents went to the area to investigate. They encountered a white male carrying a gas can and a shotgun,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw. “He was ordered to drop the two pieces of equipment he had with him, at which time he dropped the gas canister and raised his rifle into a firing position. At that time, the deputy and two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.”
