Arsenal: Are Gunners in danger of repeating history?

Similar to this season, they traveled to the West Midlands to face relegation-battling Alex McLeish’s Birmingham City in their 27th game.

Following a horrific injury to Arsenal striker Eduardo and a goal scored by 10-man Birmingham’s James McFadden, 18-year-old Theo Walcott scored his first Premier League goal to put the leaders 2-1 ahead going into extra time.

However, a foul by Gael Clichy meant Arsenal conceded a penalty, allowing McFadden to score an equalizer in the 95th minute; Just a minute after Tom Edozie scored for Wolves on Wednesday.

After drawing a game they dominated, Arsenal defender William Gallas sat on the pitch in what Match of the Day commentator Jonathan Pearce described as a “state of disbelief”.

Although Gabriel Jesus’ shove of Yerson Camira on Wednesday was not as dramatic, it shows that many Arsenal players were similarly stunned and frustrated after the final whistle.

While a 2-2 draw on 23 February 2008 meant Manchester United’s 5-1 win at Newcastle cut the gap at the top to just three points, Wednesday night’s result gives Manchester City the chance to close the gap to just two points if they win the game in hand.

The current Arsenal side hope the similarities end there. The Gunners won just one of their next seven games in the Premier League 18 years ago.

Such poor results saw them fall to third place, nine points behind new leaders Manchester United.

Despite winning their last four matches, Arsenal finished the season in third place with 83 points; four behind champions Manchester United and two behind Chelsea.
