Sometime in December 2025 Image circulating on social media It is alleged that US Vice President JD Vance had an argument with his wife Usha Vance in a restaurant.
In the photo, JD Vance can be seen wearing a white T-shirt and sitting opposite Usha Vance with a stern expression. One Facebook user who shared this (archived) wrote:
Looks like things aren’t so good with the Republicans. Usha is a liberal. It always was. Apparently they had and [sic] An argument loud enough to silence the restaurant. Why is he wearing a t-shirt?
The image circulated elsewhere on Facebook and (archived Here And Here). In short, it was fake.
After Snopes first published his story, YouTuber Keith Edwards reached out to confirm that the image was a photo. clip art created for something October 2025 videohe describes it as “fake”. Edwards told us he used the AI platform ChatGPT to create the image.
The thumbnail matched the image circulating on social media. In both cases, the man had the same facial expression and the woman was positioned in the same way. A reverse image search did not lead us to any previous version of the fabricated image.
JD Vance himself appeared to support the conclusion that the image was fake In the December 9th post (archived), responded to a user who shared the image with a comment that appeared to mock the rumor: ““I always wear an undershirt when I go out to have a loud fight with my wife.”
We also examined the image in three AI detection platforms: Hive, Sightengine, and Image Whisperer. Sightengine estimated a 97% chance that the image was created by AI, while Image Whisperer concluded with “high confidence” that the image was created by AI.
However, Hive flagged the image as “Unlikely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.” It is worth noting that these tools are not always accurate and their results should be interpreted with caution.
Team before Edwards’ confirmation GetReal SecurityThe company, which specializes in authenticating digital media, also analyzed the image for Snopes.
Hany FaridGetReal co-founder and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, told us that the low quality of the image makes forensic analysis difficult. But the team found “biometric anomalies” that suggested the image “may have been created by artificial intelligence or simply be a photo of someone who looks like him.” [JD] “Vance.”
“In particular, the facial features in the image do not match images of Vance from that period,” Farid added. Simultaneous images are photographs taken at approximately the same time that are used to verify the authenticity of another image.
Matthew StammSnopes, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Drexel University, said he and his doctoral student analyzed the image to determine whether the image was produced by AI using a special forensic tool that detects subtle “fingerprints” left by generative AI. Stamm said the tool “determined with roughly 95% confidence that it was unable to detect traces left by generative AI.”
However, he warned that this does not prove that the image is real and cannot definitively rule out the creation of artificial intelligence. “Factors such as its size, low resolution and repeated sharing on social media have made analysis difficult and are changing.”The quality of the forensic prints we analyze is similar to the smearing of fingerprints at a crime scene,” Stamm explained.
The fabricated image went viral amid rumors of a rift in the Vances’ marriage that began spreading in October 2025. Photos of Usha Vance without her wedding ring the following month further fueled speculation.
But a spokesman he told USA Today In a statement on November 21, he stated that Usha Vance “is a mother of three young children, does a lot of dishes, takes a lot of baths, and sometimes forgets her ring.” Other publicly available Getty Images It showed him wearing Usha Vance’s wedding ring from November.
One Interview with NBC News on December 4J.D. Vance said the couple’s marriage is “as strong as ever.”
