Asda undercuts rival supermarkets with new £5 premium meal deal
Asda has launched a range of £5 premium meal deals featuring 17 new mains across the UK.
The dishes available Monday are part of the chain’s “Extraordinary” series and include chicken parmigiana, beef birria wrap, chicken caesar salad, and pasta salad with mozzarella and pesto.
The new £5 deal undercuts rival supermarket giants, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s, which are pricing premium meal deals at up to £6.
The new range follows meal deals when Asda began offering customers a main course, snack and drink for £3.74 in September last year.
For a standard meal deal, customers can choose from 132 main courses, 336 snacks and 222 drinks.
The premium meal offer is available in supermarkets across the country, including express stores, and is priced the same for members and non-members.
Other items launching Monday include the focaccia sandwich with prosciutto cotto and milano salami, the steak and onion chutney sandwich, the New York deli sandwich, the chicken katsu dragon roll, the spicy shrimp dragon roll and the YO! Sushi products.
Priced slightly lower than premium meal deals at other major supermarkets. A Tesco premium meal costs £5.50 with Clubcard, £5.50 without Clubcard and £6 without. The premium meal deal at Sainsbury’s costs £5.50.
In the co-operative, members pay £5.50 and non-members pay £6.
Money-saving blogger Alasdair Baker, who runs the blog The Penny Pincher, said shoppers could save a decent amount of money by opting for the Asda meal deal.
“Compared to Tesco Clubcard holders, you save 50p, up to £1 if you’re not a member elsewhere. “This might not sound like a huge amount, but it’s even more significant if you’re buying lunch regularly.
“Over the course of a working month (about 20 lunch days), that would put £10 to £20 back in your pocket,” he added.
