Assam CM Sarma Escalates Beef Debate In Last Leg Of Election Campaign

Guwahati language : As the election campaign enters its final phase, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has escalated the row over beef, claiming that public consumption of beef is not accepted and will not be tolerated.

Threatening legal action against the parents of 27-year-old Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Choudhury, who is making his post-election debut, Mr. Sarma reacted angrily and said that any Hindu who is found displaying photos of his parents eating beef should not vote for such a candidate. “We Hindus-Sanatanis worship the cow. You say that I am targeting a young woman candidate, if they advocate eating beef in my holy Assam, this is not something I will fight against the whole world,” the Prime Minister said.

He reiterated that he will not tolerate the consumption of beef, which is prohibited by law, and also in this sacred land of Kamakhya, Shankardev and Madhavdev.

He recalled: “I had given the order to open fire in the area in Dhubri to stop the sale of beef. In fact, on my call, Muslims have now stopped eating beef in Assam.”

He said Kunki Choudhury’s parents were also trying to grab land in his constituency where they had established a university.

Mr. Sarma claimed that once the selection process is completed, an FIR will be registered against Ms. Choudhury’s parents under the provisions of the Cattle Protection Act. He did not elaborate on the specific details of the alleged violation.

While warning that Hindus should not underestimate or test their patience, Sarma said, “Assam has a cattle prevention law. There is a provision of 3 years imprisonment for those who eat beef in public. I will not spare those who eat cow meat. As per the law, I will file an FIR against them at the police station.”

The Chief Minister said public should file an FIR against AJP candidate Kunki Chowdhury’s parents for posting photos of beef consumption on social media, ignoring the statements of her parents who called it a fake campaign through fake social media posts.

Meanwhile, AJP candidate from Guwahati Central constituency, Kunki Chowdhury, has lodged an FIR at the Cyber Police Station, alleging that an AI-generated video featuring him has been circulated.

According to the complaint, the sharing of the artificial intelligence-generated video on social media platforms using multiple unidentified accounts raises serious concerns about misinformation. Ms Chowdhury said the incident was a deliberate attempt to tarnish her reputation and hinder her campaign and also dragged her mother Sujata Gurung Chowdhury into the controversy.
