Assam Elections: Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigns in a jolt before state polls, BJP ticket in buzz

Nagaon Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from all posts, privileges and substantive membership of the party.

In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, he said, “It is with a feeling of great sadness that I hereby tender my resignation from all offices, privileges and primary membership of the Indian National Congress.” he said.

There is a buzz that Bordoloi may be fielded from the Dispur assembly seat by the BJP. Over the last few days, Bordoloi has fired a salvo against Assam Pradesh Congress committee President Gaurav Gogoi.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also approached disgruntled Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi with an offer to join the BJP and contest from any assembly seat of his choice.

Speaking in New Delhi, Sarma said, “The party has held its meeting and we will give 26 seats to AGP and 11 seats to BPF, while the rest will be contested by the BJP. The parliamentary committee of the BJP will meet on Wednesday and the list of candidates will be announced on Wednesday or Thursday.”
Nagaon MP Bordoloi, senior Congress leader, had earlier expressed his displeasure over Dr Asif Nazar being considered as the party ticket from Lahorighat assembly constituency. He wrote a letter to Jitendra Singh, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of Assam, expressing his concerns. Bordoloi told media persons that he felt humiliated by the way he was treated within the party and added that he had been sidelined since the day Shashi Tharoor contested for the Congress presidency in 2022. Sarma said he is yet to speak to Bordoloi personally but reiterated his invitation: “If he wants, he can join the BJP and we will make him an offer. “No Sanatani Hindu who has seats to contest the assembly polls can stay with the Congress.

Meanwhile, Bordoloi’s son Prateek Bordoloi was selected as the Congress candidate for the Margherita seat.

Sarma said on Monday that the developments reflected his earlier prediction that Bordoloi would not remain in Congress for long. Sarma said, “I had already predicted this. I knew he could not stay in the party for long because the people who allegedly tried to kill him were met with gamosa by the APCC chief. I have been working with him for 15 years and he has self-respect. Many people ignore his self-respect and stay in the party, but one day they will not be able to continue and will leave. Pradyut Bordoloi will leave the party in 2029.”
