Yograj Singh slams selectors over Shubman Gill’s T20 World Cup omission, invokes 1983 World Cup legend

Former India cricketer Yograj Singh does not accept the logic of the selectors. He was stunned by the call, saying a few average games shouldn’t erase what a player brings to the table or what he does for the team in the long run.

“Shubman Gill is the vice-captain. What is the reason behind dropping him? Just because he failed in 4-5 innings? Indian cricketers have had too many players who can barely perform in 10 out of 100 opportunities,” Yograj told Ravi Bisht in a YouTube show.

Yograj went on to bring up Abhishek Sharma and wondered if other youngsters would be let go the moment they hit a rough patch. He warned the voters not to make hasty and sudden choices.

“They were still playing; you already know why. Young Abhishek Sharma came a few years ago. If he fails in four overs, will you drop him too?” he added.

He also looked back on his own cricketing days and shared how Bishan Singh Bedi stood by Kapil Dev during a tough tour of England even as Kapil struggled with both bat and ball. Bedi saw the big picture; The value Kapil brings beyond numbers.

After the New Zealand and World Cup squads were announced, chief selector Ajit Agarkar tried to explain. He said the move was all about team balance and not a reflection of Shubman Gill’s skill or form.

He was also unlucky to miss the last World Cup when we chose a different combination.
