Denmark sets up ‘night watch’ to monitor Trump since Greenland row | Greenland

The Danish government established a “night watch” at the foreign ministry. Wildlings and White Walkers It’s like Game of Thrones’ Night Watch, mostly to monitor Donald Trump’s statements and movements while Copenhagen sleeps.

The vigil starts at 5pm every day, and by 7am a report is prepared and distributed among the Danish government and relevant departments about what has been said and what has happened. Politiken newspaper reported.

This position is understood to have been put forward after a diplomatic dispute between Copenhagen and Washington over Greenland this spring, when the US president threatened to seize control of the Arctic island.

Politiken said the initiative is one of several examples of how Danish diplomacy and the country’s civil service have had to adapt to the new reality of the second Trump administration.

A source close to the foreign office told the Guardian: “It’s fair to say that the situation in Greenland and the time difference between Denmark and the US were a pretty significant factor in bringing about this arrangement in the spring.”

Rather than everyone having to immediately reach for their phones to keep up with news from the United States, the State Department is instead making a “concerted effort” to keep up to date on Trump, the State Department said.

Jacob Kaarsbo, a former chief analyst at Denmark’s defense intelligence agency, said this development showed that the idea that the US was Denmark’s biggest and most important ally was dead “as we always knew”. “Alliances are built on common values and common threat perception,” Kaarsbo said. “Trump doesn’t share any of this with us, and I don’t think he shares it with most Europeans.”
