At pre-Budget meet in Delhi, Sawant seeks equitable Centre-state funding for Goa

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has sought a fairer Centre-state funding model under centrally sponsored programmes, taking into account Goa’s coastal challenges, Western Ghats ecology and national tourism responsibilities.

Sawant attended the pre-budget meeting of Union Budget 2026-27 chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Saturday. Finance ministers of various states and Union Territories and other senior officials attended the meeting.

In a statement later, Sawant said the meeting included detailed discussions on key provisions and priorities for the upcoming Union Budget.

“Goa’s perspectives, demands and developmental needs were presented with a focus on sustaining momentum on critical infrastructure projects,” he said.


The CM said Goa has also sought to strengthen social welfare schemes, provide ongoing support for capital investment, take forward state-specific Finance Commission recommendations and seek “a more equitable Center state financing model under centrally sponsored programmes”, taking into account Goa’s coastal challenges, Western Ghats ecology and national tourism responsibilities.
“Special emphasis was laid on improving industrial and logistics connectivity, strengthening rail links to major urban centres, and developing climate-resilient infrastructure to tackle coastal and environmental challenges,” the CM said. The discussions also covered the need to increase healthcare capacity, strengthen waste management and sanitation systems, support tourism diversification and skills, and accelerate the transition to renewable and clean energy in line with national climate commitments, the CM said.

“As Goa continues its journey towards Viksit Goa 2037 in line with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, these consultations are an important step towards aligning the state’s aspirations with national development goals,” he added.
