Australia demolish Oman in T20 World Cup dead rubber

Australia defeated Oman by nine wickets to win their final Twenty20 World Cup group match in Pallekele on Friday, despite both teams being eliminated from the tournament.

Chasing a modest target of 105 for victory, skipper Mitchell Marsh was in no mood to dawdle and sent Oman’s bowlers ruthlessly to every corner of the park, making his half-century off just 26 balls in the first powerplay.

Omani Shakeel Ahmed collided with goalkeeper Vinayak Shukla as he caught Travis Head and lobbed the ball over the top for 32, but the 38-year-old spinner was so delighted that he brought out Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark goal celebration.

Marsh made an unbeaten 64 with seven boundaries and four sixes to take Australia home from 62 balls, equaling the T20 World Cup record for the fastest chase total of over 100.

Earlier, Australia put together a clinical bowling display to dismiss Oman for 104 in 16.2 overs after winning the toss and opting to field, with Adam Zampa finishing the match with scores of 4-21.
