A 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Xinjiang on Tuesday morning, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported.
According to NCS, the earthquake occurred at 08.45 in the morning, at a depth of 10 km underground.

This is because seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to reach the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and more casualties.
