South Australia’s legal and prison systems were left in limbo overnight. AAP Staff are considering ending the strike, which has led to the closure of courts and a 96-hour quarantine of prisoners.
Correctional officers are on strike due to a crisis in staffing levels caused by inadequate salary offers, an increase in violence in prisons and low wages.
More than 1,000 corrections officers statewide voted to strike on Monday and on Thursday to extend the strike to 96 hours. They are striking because of inadequate wage offers, increased violence in prisons, and staff shortages caused by low wages.
The strike plunged the prison system into a four-day quarantine, with more than 2,000 inmates confined to their cells since 7.30am on Monday.
Union delegates were consulting with members late on Thursday and striking staff will meet again this morning to decide whether further action will be taken or a deal reached with the government.
