Australia recognises Palestine in major policy change

WHAT HAPPENED?
* Prime Minister Anthony Arbanese announced that Australia knew Palestine in front of an address in the United Nations in New York.
* Australia joined more than 140 UN member states following the long -standing Palestinian requests.
Why did Australia do this?
* Canberra worked with allies, including England and Canada as part of a common effort to create a momentum for a two -state solution.
* Almost two years after Hamas killed more than 1200 Israelis on the October 7 attack, more than 60,000 Palestinians were killed in Gaza because of Israel’s military retaliation
Why is it controversial?
* The two -state solution is trying to create a separate Palestinian state and is seen as the only way for a permanent peace by the Albanian government
* Most discussions see a Palestinian state as the West Bank and Gaza before Israel settlement
* Just as Jerusalem is to be divided, if any, it continues to be a big stick point
What did people say?
“Australia recognizes the legitimate and long -standing desires of the Palestinian people to their states” – Prime Minister Anthony Albanian and Foreign Minister Penny Wong
* “This will not happen. There will be no Palestinian state in the west of the Jordan River” – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
* “Coalition strongly opposes the actions of the Albanian Government to expand the diplomatic recognition to the Palestinian province. Recognition should come at the end of a peace process, not during conflict” – Opposition leader Sussan Ley
