Adam Gilchrist cited the possibility of Australia pushing Cameron Green to No.5 and moving Travis Head to No.6 in the Ashes table amid concerns over the all-rounder’s ability to thrive at first drop.

The former Australian wicketkeeper’s comments came as Marnus Labuschagne revealed he was happy to bat anywhere against England – if selected – but noted he has spent almost his entire Test career at No.3.

Gilchrist is reluctant to move Head up the rankings but isn’t convinced Green is fit for No.3 either. The Fox commentator said moving Green to No. 5 could be valuable given Head’s history as a disruptive mid-range player.

“Head works really well at five o’clock,” Gilchrist told this imprint. “It adds some versatility to the batting approach. I think it allows Travis to play without limits, whereas maybe going three would in theory put a little more responsibility on his shoulders.

“I think Travis is in the middle of the pack and he’s probably right.

“I don’t see a huge difference between Travis hitting five or six, which pushes him to the back of the order. But if that gets Green at five, Travis at six, and Kez.” [Alex Carey] at seven [that is an option to consider].”
