The earthquake occurred around 7:58 a.m. local time, according to the National Seismological Service. The incident occurred near the town of San Marcos in the state of Guerrero, located in the country’s south, 92 kilometers (57 miles) northeast of the Pacific coast resort town of Acapulco.
The earthquake was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) as occurring at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 km). Although some international organizations initially reported the magnitude as 6.2, the Mexican national agency later reported the magnitude as 6.5.
Presidential Briefing Interruption
President Claudia Sheinbaum was in the middle of a daily briefing at the National Palace when the seismic alarm system started going off. When the President and his entourage experienced the shaking movement of the building, the President and the reporters present immediately followed the procedure and evacuated the room.
Continuing her briefing shortly thereafter, Sheinbaum said publicly that she had been in contact with Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado.

“We have mobilized all protocols related to civil defense,” the President said. “Fortunately, there is damage to the magnitude of Guerrero and the capital, and there is no information about victims,” he explained.
Panic in the Capital
The fact that Mexico City is located on a lake bed, which is a deposit of soil, meant that the effects of earthquake waves were increased. The city’s warning system gave residents a precious second of lead as thousands of people, some in pajamas, poured out of buildings and onto the city’s main streets, including Paseo de la Reforma.
