Australian Open Million Dollar One Point Slam: Amateur Jordan Smith stuns world’s best

A total of 48 competitors, including 24 top professionals, participated in the event, which was held four days before the start of the Australian Open on Sunday.
The rest of the competition was made up of eight amateur winners of the state championship rounds, eight Melbourne place-winners and eight wild card players, including celebrities and invited guests.
Matches started with a ‘rock, paper, scissors’ game to decide who would serve, each match consisted of a single point and the winner progressed to a knockout format.
The Australian Open’s first One Point Slam event was held in 2025, but the prize fund was AU$60,000 (£29,400) and Russia’s Andrey Rublev was the only top 10 player to enter the competition.
It is the latest attempt by tennis authorities to attract new attention to the sport, following the introduction of a stand-alone mixed doubles championship at the US Open ahead of last year’s main draw.
