The multibillion-dollar social media industry is increasingly using machine learning to track people’s online movements, compare them with those of similar demographics and create complex algorithms that work in more complex ways than their creators first realized, said Jenny L. Davis, a professor of sociology at Vanderbilt University and the Australian National University.
