Brisbane child accused of school stabbing allegedly faced ‘racist’ abuse, court hears | Brisbane

A Brisbane boy accused of stabbing a fellow student allegedly suffered months of “racist” abuse and threats, a court has heard.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old schoolmate on Tuesday.

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared in Richlands juvenile court on Wednesday. He was released on bail.

The court heard allegations that the boy stabbed a fellow student multiple times.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Shane Stephenson told the court the incident was “extremely serious and worrying” and claimed it was “deliberate”.

“The complainant had injuries on the right side of his waist and the right side of his torso, the injury caused injuries to his liver which caused internal bleeding,” Stephenson said.

“It is considered life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention in surgery.”

Stephenson told the court the attack may have stemmed from a social media post.

“[The alleged attack] “It is completely disproportionate to any perceived insult that might result from a social media post.”

However, defense lawyer Torik Dib argued that the child had been bullied on social media for months.

“There are a lot of kids from a certain background in a particular school, and these people are harassing and intimidating the applicant on social media, online and in person,” Dib said.

In court, he read the messages shown to him by the defendant’s family, harassing the family on ethnic grounds.

Dib told the court that the child was threatened and slandered on various platforms.

“In the last two months, violence has increased at school due to racist attacks against him,” he said.

Judge Mark Howden described the messages as “threatening and racist”.

He decided to release the child on bail with conditions.

The case was postponed to September 3.
