Engineering domains evolving rapidly, choose courses with relevance, speakers tell students at webinar

Choosing an engineering major based solely on its popularity may not work well for students because the course may lose relevance to the industry when students graduate, speakers at a webinar on Sunday said.

Speakers explained that engineering fields are evolving so rapidly that the core subjects and sectors chosen by students may not remain industry-relevant when they graduate. According to statistics, Computer Science was the most popular course, but there was no guarantee that it would provide job opportunities in the future. Therefore, they emphasized that it is important for students to think four years ahead and choose relevant academic courses wisely.

The webinar was organized in partnership with our University SASTRA. Hindu Education Plus As part of the Career X for Generation Z series.

John Bosco Balaguru Rayappan, Dean of Sponsored Research and Professor, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, SASTRA Deemed University, said that by 2030, there will be a demand for an estimated 30 lakh engineers with relevant skills. Core subjects such as civil, mechanical and electrical engineering offered excellent career opportunities if students gained hands-on experience and developed soft skills.

R. Narayanan, senior partner and head (Education and Skills Development) of KPMG India, said that in an environment where the impact of artificial intelligence is felt in all sectors, smart and sustainable engineering is important to understand industry expectations.

Anamika Tiwari Chada, head of HR, Staples India, encouraged students to explore paths that suit their skills, interests and streams based on common sense. He asked the students to use AI carefully as a helping tool and not as an auxiliary tool.

Sowmya Suresh, vice president and head, Entry Staff Fresher Management, HCL Tech, said e-commerce, digital marketing and renewable energy are sectors expected to grow due to technological advancements.
