Authorities make shocking discovery after intercepting suspicious boat — here’s what they found

During a major animal smuggling raid, Sri Lankan Navy He stopped the bird kidnapping attempt.

What happened?

according to Daily NewsNaval Detachment Kachchativu, commanded by SLNS Wasaba, of Sri Lanka’s Northern Naval Command, detected a suspicious boat and took immediate action to initiate an investigation.

When they arrived at the boat, authorities detected three suspects trying to kidnap 237 pigeons. They immediately seized the birds, the suspects and the boat.

Why is this smuggling attempt concerning?

Wildlife trafficking is a profitable business that generates billions of dollars each year. It is also extremely dangerous for smuggling wildlife; because these animals are improperly handled and cared for during smuggling attempts, resulting in injury and death.

When trafficked wildlife dies, this contributes to population decline, which can be disastrous for already endangered species.

Although many people consider pigeons to be pests, these birds role in urban ecosystems. They are responsible for dispersing seeds and maintaining green spaces in cities, providing fertilizer with their droppings, and serving as bioindicators; that is, their health and well-being can indicate how well an ecosystem is functioning. Pigeons removed from their natural habitats disrupt the balance of urban ecosystems.

Additionally, when traffickers smuggle wild animals into new areas, these animals can become invasive species. Invasive species can cause a multitude of problems in their new home; for example, pigeons can carry pathogens and parasites that can affect native birds and wildlife.

Invasive animal species can also reduce food security, change soil chemistry, and even contribute to an increase in extreme weather events.

What is being done to prevent wildlife trafficking in Sri Lanka?

The Navy sent the alleged suspects to Delft Police Station for further legal action.

Sri Lanka was founded in 2012 Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Networka semi-official group that includes all of the country’s law enforcement agencies. These agencies work together to share information about trafficking activities and train agents to better gather intelligence and detect and combat trafficking attempts.
